Built by Taylorcraft Aeroplanes (England) Ltd in 1943 as an Auster Mk III (c/n 373) and allocated RAF serial NJ970, this aircraft was shipped to Australia in April 1945 and allocated RAAF registration A11-34. It was sold to Department of Civil Aviation in December 1947 and registered VH-BKK on the 18th.

The photo shows VH-BKK at an air display at its Melbourne/Essendon base in June 1948 with a 'giant' RAAF Lincoln bomber providing a scale contrast in the background.

It was later re-registered in the Department’s own registration block as VH-CAJ in 1949.
