Hobart/Cambridge Runway Selection Diagram - 1955

This Runway Selection Diagram, No R-001CA Issue 2 dated 18 July 1955, was prepared by DCA to show which runways at Hobart's Cambridge Aerodrome could be used depending on the wind strength and direction. In this case, the diagram covers Douglas DC3 and Bristol 170 (Freighter) aircraft for take-off at night in dry weather only.

By plotting the current wind speed and direction on the wind rose, the required runway for take-off (in this case) would be indicated by a coloured segment. The construction of these diagrams took into account a number of factors including aircraft take-off (or landing) performance, crosswind limits and terrain considerations. The red sectors in the diagram above indicated that take-off was not permitted in those particular wind conditions, and someone has also added an amendment note that take-off was not permitted on Runways 30 or 32 at night, probably because of high terrain to the north of the airport.
