In November/December 1959 this new Control Tower was commissioned at Darwin: however on 17 December 1965 the RAAF resumed responsibility from DCA for air traffic control at Darwin, also using this Tower.

This Tower, photographed above in the 1970s, was badly damaged by Cyclone Tracy which hit Darwin on Christmas Eve, 1974.

During 1998 a replacement Fire Station and Control Tower were constructed within a new civil area to the north of the runway. The Fire Station was commissioned in 1999 and the Control Tower (still RAAF-operated) in 2000. This Tower (Darwin's 3rd) was demolished shortly after to make way for aircraft shelters.
