In 1928 the Commonwealth Government called for tenders for the operation of a regular Perth-Adelaide air service. The tender was won by Norman Brearley's Western Australian Airways (W.A.Airways) with a proposal to operate three-engine, 14-passenger de Havilland D.H.66 Hercules aircraft. W.A.Airways produced this brochure, On Airways Magic Carpet Across Australia, "...to give passengers, and intending passengers, some idea of the sights, experiences and accommodation which is provided for them on this Transcontinental airway." Evidently written by Edward J. Hart, the often caustic editor and proprietor of Aircraft magazine, at that time Australia's leading aeronautical journal, the brochure contains a detailed description of a typical journey, complete with strip maps. This copy was given to passenger Miss S. Austin for a journey from Perth to Adelaide, commencing on 4 November 1930. < The entire brochure can be downloaded by clicking on the image at left.
