De Havilland DH82a Tiger Moth VH-ADW

Almost against the odds, considering the number of Tiger Moths that were written off in accidents over the years, former DCA Tiger VH-CAD (c/n 1079) has survived.

Following acquisition by the Tasmanian Aero Club in 1953 and re-registration as VH-BSB, it was sold three years later, on 23 January 1956, to W. G. Knight of Dennington NSW. The aircraft was subsequently damaged in an accident at Mailors Flat, Vic, (date unknown). It was struck-off the civil Register on 29 March 1957.

Australian aviation historian Geoff Goodall notes that "VH-ADW was a rebuild by the Royal Newcastle Aero Club at West Maitland in the early '70s based on the mortal remains of VH-BSB. I have no notes on where it was stored and what owners between '57 and it showing up as a rebuild project in the back of the hangar at WMD around 1970. It was completed in a striking yellow and black civil colour scheme, and Wilson kept it in a small hangar at WMD for the next 20 years." VH-ADW was added to the Register on 5 December 1973 to A. D. Wilson, Sydney, NSW.

As at May 2006 VH-ADW is registered to Altair Aeronautics Pty. Ltd. of The Junction, NSW. The upper photo shows it at the Narromine Airshow on 1 October 2005 painted fictitiously as 'K2576', one of the initial batch of UK-built Tiger Moths for the RAF. The lower photo shows VH-ADW arriving at the 2006 Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia's Annual Fly-in at Narrandera on 22 April 2006.
