Construction of Perth International Terminal - 1985

The Federal Minister for Transport, Ralph Hunt, announced the construction of the new Terminal and Tower in 1980. Design commence in 1982 and construction in March 1984 on a 'greenfields' site to the south-east of the runway intersection. The Tower is situated behind the Terminal, relative to the runways. The photo above shows the Terminal construction in the foreground and the Tower behind. The photo below looks roughly the opposite way and Runway 06/24 can be seen beyond the first band of trees, all of which would be removed in favour of apron and taxiways. The wet and sandy nature of the soil in the area can be clearly seen in the photos below.
