VAR Installation - Internal View

Inside the transmitter hut of the first installation of a Visual-Aural Range (VAR) beacon in Australia, at Melbourne/Essendon in 1947. Subsequent installations throughout Australia looked very similar.

In the centre of the photo is the transmitter cabinet and, to the right, the aural and visual sideband generators respectively. This complete equipment set was duplicated out of shot to the left, providing redundancy.
